Boosting vitamin D intake among hospital patients could reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections, according to researchers at East Tennessee State University.

Vitamin D plays an important antimicrobial role, they say, and many diseases are linked to low concentrations of the vitamin.

Optimal vitamin D concentrations are at least 75-100nmol/l but about half of hospital patients have concentrations below 50nmol/l, the authors said in the journal Dermato-Endocrinology.

They said: “Vitamin D [supplement] use could reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescription and boost therapeutic response when combined with appropriate antibiotic use.”
