Lydie Paillard, a woman of 60 being treated for a cancer at the Polyclinique Bordeaux-Rive Droite in Lormont woke up 15 hours after being pronounced “very certainly clinically dead” on Monday 18 October 2010. She had passed out while receiving medical treatment before a chemotherapy session and an attempt was made to resuscitate her by an emergency doctor who, after consulting other doctors, broke the news to the patient’s children that she was clinically dead.
Her children insisted that their mother be transferred to the teaching hospital in Bordeaux where a scanner contradicted the diagnosis of brain death.
The Polyclinique will propose an interview with the patient and her family to discuss this “communication breakdown“. The family has hired a lawyer.
